As an LDC-led, LDC-owned initiative, LIFE-AR promotes equitable and equal partnerships with the international community. LIFE-AR provides a platform to openly discuss, co-create and share solutions to address the climate challenges, with trust, transparency and mutual accountability.
LIFE-AR appreciate the continued support of our funding partners, who have been key to launch the initiative and committed to the LIFE-AR principles.
The UK has been financially supporting LIFE AR since April 2020 and has an approved Business Case for continued support through to March 2028. Support for LIFE AR provides FCDO with the proof of concept of delivery against the LLA Principles which the UK endorsed in January 2021.
The UK is using the approach developed under LIFE AR to demonstrate the feasibility and desirability of supporting locally led actions within and outside the climate adaptation space.
Canada announced its endorsement of the LIFE-AR Partnership Compact at COP27 in 2022 and began providing funding to the initiative in 2024. ECCC hopes that LIFE-AR will help increase adaptive capacity in countries that are on the frontlines of climate change, and enable LDCs to put processes in place that will increase their resilience in the long term.
Ireland has been supporting LIFE-AR since 2020. What got Irish Aid interested was one of the key goals: that at least 70% of funding goes to the local level. Ireland was also keen to work on changing the systems in place, and creating a new global initiative that can work in different national contexts. Irish Aid is looking for impact and results on the ground.
Former Special Presidential Envoy for Climate (SPEC) John Kerry signed the LIFE-AR Compact on behalf of the United States at a Signing Ceremony hosted by the U.S. Pavilion during COP26 in Glasgow.
The support for LIFE-AR is part of a broader effort within the U.S. government to collaborate with partners to accelerate climate adaptation and resilience in a way that supports gender-responsive, locally-led adaptation.
This signaled the US support of the LDC’s intention to channel 70% of climate finance flows to accelerate action on the ground in LDCs by 2030.
The United States supported the initiative until January 2025.
